The fourth grade at Saint Bernard's is fortuante enough to attend Starbase for one week in the Spring. Starbase is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization whose primary purpose is to increase the knowledge, skills, and interest of inner city youth in science, mathematics, and technology through aerospace education. The program provides a mix of hands-on, real-world learning activities and opportunities for experimentation and exploration. The students are inspired to learn from unique educational experiences!
Students will develop and test scientific hypotheses; collect, analyze, and record data in graphs, apply computer technology to solve problems; explore careers; practice work readiness skills; and study history through exploration and experimentation in the following activities:
- Construct, fly and conduct experiments with gliders and kites
- Build, launch and conduct experiments with rockets
- Explore the effects of lift and drag on different shaped objects using a wind tinnel
- Experiment with motion, properties of air and forces of flight
- See "real world" applications of science and technology
- Tour the MN Air Guard Museum to learn about the development of aviation and technology
- Homework, journaling and extension activites to reinforce and transfer their learning
