Minnesota-Wisconsin Reciprocity

Minnesota
students wishing to attend (public) colleges in Wisconsin, North Dakota or South Dakota are eligible to apply for tuition reciprocity, which means that they can attend, paying residential tuition.  Conversely, students from  these states may attend Minnesota colleges paying residential tuition aw well.

The process of applying is really quite simple, and to this end the Minnesota Higher Education Services Office (MHESO) directs those interested to go to their website at www.getreadyforcollege.org.   Once there go to “Reciprocity” where you will see the following:

Online Tuition Reciprocity Application

Affordable education in other states, because you live in Minnesota

This online reciprocity application is designed for Minnesota residents attending certain public colleges and universities in Wisconsin and North Dakota.

The online reciprocity application is the easiest way to apply for reciprocity benefits. However, if you prefer not to apply online, paper applications are also available and can be obtained off the website.   (Note: Be sure you keep a copy of your application, once you’ve sent it.)

Minnesota residents attending public colleges or universities in South Dakota will have their eligibility for reciprocity benefits determined by the campus they attend. They should not submit an application to the Minnesota Office of Higher Education.

Private colleges do NOT participate in the tuition reciprocity program because they do not charge non-resident tuition rates.

Basically, it’s a “win-win” situation, all the way around.  As such, I encourage you to apply over the Internet.  It’s very “user-friendly,” taking just a few minutes.

IMPORTANT:   Whatever you decide to do – either over the Internet or via a hard copy – DO IT NOW, so your student can pay the appropriate tuition when school starts.  If you don’t do it, you’ll be paying an extra $10,000 (non-residential tuition).

Should you have any specific questions concerning the whole Tuition Reciprocity Program, you can call the MHESO Reciprocity Staff at (651) 642-0567.
