• Folder or 3-ring binder - for handouts/loose papers

PENCILS (pen is to be used only for formal reports)

• Notebook – used for this class only

• Calculator – graphing

• Textbook – COVERED

Notebook: should include the following

1) Notes from class discussion

2) Definitions of vocabulary words from the textbook

3) Answers to assigned questions and problems

4) “Question of the day”, question & answers

Lab Reports: done in ink (handwritten or computer generated)

1) Due the day after lab work is completed

2) Consist of: Title, Purpose, Procedure, Data and/or observations (include any tables or graphs

needed to organize/explain data), answers to questions, and a conclusion.

Grading: grades will be determined by the following

1) Notebook/homework - checked frequently: visual check, notebook quizzes, and collection.

2) Lab Reports – worth 10 points each. Due the day after lab completion. Lab reports turned in late

    will lose 1 point for each day they are late.

3) Tests – There will be approximately four tests each trimester.

4) Final – A final will be given each trimester. There is also the possibility of a take-home final

worth an additional 50 points. If you do especially well on the final, that score may replace your

lowest test score.

Grading Scale:

A 90-100%                                     D 55-64%

B 80-89%                                        F 0-54%

C 65-79%

Expectations: students are expected to

• Come to class prepared to learn

• Keep an open mind – science doesn’t have to be “hard” or “boring” - give it a chance

• Be respectful – of Mrs. T., other students, yourself, and school equipment and supplies

• Listen quietly and attentively while others are speaking

Lab Safety: the following rules apply when working in the lab

1. Horseplay in the science classroom is dangerous and will be avoided.

2. Written and verbal instructions concerning procedures and/or precautions are created for students’ protection and will
     be followed.

3. Perform ONLY authorized experiments, planned to teach a specific idea.

4. Handle only those materials or equipment for which instruction or training has been given.

5. Safety equipment is provided in the science classroom in case of an emergency. Know where the fire blanket and     
    eyewash are located and how to use this equipment.

6. Hot materials can cause serious burns. Be extremely careful when working with these so as to prevent injury.

7. Safety goggles are required BY LAW to be worn to prevent injury in many laboratory situations. Wear safety goggles 
    when instructed to do so.

8. Broken glass is dangerous. Leaving it lying around or picking it up with bare hands can cause serious injury. AFTER
    notifying the instructor, use a broom and dustpan to pick up broken glass and deposit it in a labeled container.

9. If an incident should occur that results in injury in the science classroom, IMMEDIATELY report it to the instructor, no
    matter how minor the injury is.

A safe instructional program can only be carried out through the cooperation and encouragement of parents, teachers, and students. Safety consciousness is necessary to prevent possible incidents. PLEASE READ these rules and sign in the space provided. Your signature indicates that you have read these safety rules with your daughter or son and are aware of the steps being taken to provide a safe instructional setting. Please note: the failure of your student to comply with these rules could result in his/her removal from the science laboratory.
