Welcome to Middle School
Humanities and Religion!

Here are a few of the things we've been up to...

Social Justice Conference
St. Cloud State University

Last October, 7th and 8th graders were selected to join high school students at the Social Justice Conference.  They participated in workshops on issues ranging from the War in Iraq to Domestic Violence.  It was a great experience and those who participated were able to share what they learned about social justice issues with their Public Achievement groups.

8th Grade Service Trip
Feed My Starving Children

The 8th grade students have been learning about hunger and homelessness this year as part of their confirmation preparation.  In October, we went to the Feed My Starving Children warehouse in Eagan, where students helped to package food that was then sent to people around the world.  They learned about the importance of helping those in need in other countries, and by the end of the morning had packaged enough food to feed 21 children for a year!

Science Museum Field Trip

Carla checks out a fun computer simulation in the Weather Center!

Corey and Alex explore electricity!

Public Achievement
Animal Control Center

Corey, Alex, Bridgette, Melissa visited the St. Paul Animal Control Center along with their Public Achievement coach to research the treatment of animals.  While they mostly take in cats and dogs, they have taken in all different kinds of animals including chickens, rabbits, and even a bear!

Minnesota History Center

Each grade visited the Minnesota History Center to help them prepare for their History Day Projects.  In addition to touring the library, students also had a chance to visit the exhibits.  The new exhibit, Minnesota 150 was a favorite, especially since it featured a quiz game that allowed the students to compete against each other by answering questions with a personal key pad.  We all learned a lot and had fun at the same time!

History Day

Twelve of our students competed at the regional level in the National History Day Competition.
8th graders Keyana and Monica moved on to the State level competition with their project on the S.S.St. Louis, a ship that attempted to bring Jewish refugees to Cuba during WWII. In addition, Carla, a 6th grade student, received an honorable mention award at the regional competition for her project on the Aztecs.

Public Achievement
Academy Awards Ceremony

After a year of working on various projects around the community, the middle school students were honored at a special "Academy Awards" ceremony this spring.  The students from the University of Minnesota who coached our Public Achievement groups gave out awards, and the groups that participated in the Rice Street Clean Up received a special recognition for their work in our neighborhood.

Duluth Trip

This May the 8th grade class traveled to Duluth for a service and Confirmation retreat weekend.
We helped out at food shelves, spent some time at the Cathedral, and enjoyed the waterpark at the Edgewater Hotel!
