Grade School Music Notes

Greetings to our Cyber-Visitors!

May you always keep a song in your heart!

Summer Music Adventures !
Check out your city's park system for many family- friendly concerts available.  Como Park has a variety offered Sunday -Thursday.  Don't forget that the campfire is a great time to teach your child the fune, crazy songs you learned at summer camp !

Saint Bernard's Grade School Music Room is a very, very busy place.  Each classroom visits here twice a week for 30 minutes.  Our time includes singing, dancing, games, listening, and playing instruments.

Every grade is learning to sing using solfege.  We learn to sing in the same way we learn to talk-- imitation. The solfege system was developed many hundreds of years ago.  You might recognize it from the favorite Broadway musical Sound of Music. Maria Von Trapps teaches the children to sing with the song, Do, Re, Mi.  This helps the students learn the pitch relationship of the notes of the scale.

By later in third grade, our students begin to translate all of our music sounds into musical notation.  During fourth and fifth grade,  students will have an opportunity to read and play music with recorders or tone chimes (similar to handbells).

Each grade also learns a repetoire of songs that we can use during our prayer services and Mass times.  Each class prepares to lead ministries at Mass several times a year.  We have two annual concerts--Advent/Christmas Concert and Spring Concert.
