Mr. Doug Johnson

I am beginning my third year back working in the Social Studies Department, teaching American History and the new elective course, 20th Century History. I am the faculty advisor for the student council and oversee the student work study program.

My history at Saint Bernards is a long one as I began my teaching career in the middle school, in the 1980's, taught social studies in the 1990's, and worked as the Athletic Director from 2001-2004.
I coached at the varsity level for 21 years. From 1982-1988, I was the wrestling coach and from 1992-2006,  the varsity baseball coach.
I attended Concordia Academy high school and received my undergraduate degree from Concordia-St. Paul. My MA was earned from St. Thomas in athletic administration in 1990.
Both my children attended and graduated from Saint Bernards in 2004 and 2006. Both were well prepared for their college life by Saint Bernards.
When not in the classroom, my interests are working on my golf game, biking, and collecting sports memorabilia.

UNITED STATES HISTORY

In US History, we will explore the foundations of our modern society from the earliest Native American cultures in North America until the present day.  The class work will focus on tying past events to what is happening currently and how we might try and predict the future.
The class will also focus on research papers and projects designed so that each student might be better prepared for college as well as have all students, whether they are preparing for college or not, be educated thinkers.
Mr. Johnson will teach both sections of American History this year for those Juniors, not in AP History. American History is a year long, three trimester course.
Below is a syllabus for the Fall Trimester. Every effort will be made to stay on schedule with the syllabus. Students are strongly encouraged to keep up with the reading.

UNITED STATES HISTORY

Syllabus-Fall 2008  (Will be added)

The first trimester will focus on the origins and initial expansion of both the North American continent and the United States. Typically, we will cover a chapter a week, so it is important that you keep up with the reading. Tests will be given after each chapter. There will be a Mid-Trimester exam and a Final exam.

Schedule

Grading

Grades are earned by a point system. Every assignment, paper, and test is a certain number of points. Points are totaled and your grade is determined by the number of points earned. You are responsible for the material in the textbook. Assignments that are late earn half credit. Participation, attitude, and cooperation are taken into account when determining your grade.

Materials

You should bring to class every period your textbook, notebook, and writing instrument. There will be some maps to work on so colored pencils are needed.

Expectations

My expectations are to be to class on time and be ready to learn. Class participation is expected. Basic classroom rules are needed and expected by everyone. At times, there may be differences of opinion regarding US History and events. Your opinion is welcome as that is what a democratic society is about. However, respect for others and their opinions are essential. The more you put into the class, the more you will get out of it.
