For over 110 years, Saint Bernard's School has stood as a beacon of solid Catholic education in the North End community of St. Paul. In 1890, Saint Bernard's parish was founded by German/Austrian immigrants who had moved into the North End. These immigrant families believed strongly in Roman Catholic education for their children, and so founded the grade school in 1891. The school started with 3 sisters of St. Benedict and 220 students. Over the years, the Benectine order provided strong and visionary education and leadership. In 1957, to meet the growing need for Roman Catholic secondary education, Saint Bernard's became the second parish in the Archdiocese to open a parish-based high school. As times changed and vocations to priesthood and religious life declined, the faculty and staff of the school and parish were transformed from committed religious to dedicated lay leaders. In 1995, with the arrival of an Archdiocesan pastor, the parish and school went through a review of its programs. Out of this time of reflection, a new mission and philosophy emerged that embraced the Benedictine tradition "That in all things, God my be glorified", while at the same time advanced the parish mission to proclaim Jesus Christ. In order to better carry this out, in 1998 the high school and grade school were united, creating the first and only co-educational preschool through grade 12 school in the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis.
Rooted in Tradition....
Since the founding of Saint Bernard's School, the leadership has boldly met the growing challenges society has presented. Rooted in the tradition of the Catholic Church, Saint Bernard's School embraces all children as gifts, and upholds an educational mission that strives to help students to realize their distinctive place in creation and fulfill their potential as children of God. Recognizing parents as the primary educators, Saint Bernard's enters into an educational partnership with parents and guardians of our students to ensure the most meaningful education possible.
Growing in Excellence....
Comfortably small in size, with a targeted student to teacher ratio of 16:1, Saint Bernard's School provides an unequalled educational setting where the focus is on the varied learning styles and unique needs of each student. To this end, Saint Bernard's School provides a wide variety of educational, co-curricular, and extra-curricular experiences. Each student is nurtured and challenged to use the gifts God gave them to reach their highest potential. As a result, over 95% of our graduates pursue post-secondary options; many achieve National Honor Society recognition, and some are proudly honored as National Merit Finalists. Over 83% of our students participate in extra-curricular activities and a significant number participate in Public Achievement, a national initiative that encourages young people to live lives of service and justice. Key to the educational formation of a Saint Bernard's student is the invitation to live the mission to Proclaim Jesus Christ.
